Headed up by former Bafana coach Clive Barker for the first two years,
(he is now a patron of the Academy), it is currently under the tutorship
of coach Dan Haswell, assisted by coaches Thabiso Makhetha (Assistant),
Sam Ngubane (skills coach) and Pelewe Delamogo (goalkeeping).
The program offers the same benefits of the rugby division, but with the key difference being that the gym and on field training is soccer specific. A major benefit of the Academy is the partnership with PSL franchise AmaZulu Football Club. The academy currently has 2 teams campaigning in the Durban Central Football Association leagues as AmaZulu FC and the players are registered with AmaZulu FC.
This partnership means that The Sharks Academy players feed directly into the AmaZulu reserve side, the tier directly below their PSL squad. A number of other players in the academy have also earned provincial and national colours.
“AmaZulu Football Club is delighted to be involved in the joint venture with The Sharks Football Academy. As an iconic sports brand, not only in South Africa but throughout the rugby world, The Sharks have produced world class rugby players who have played with distinction for both The Sharks and the Springboks. In the same manner, through the association with the academy, AmaZulu is aiming to develop footballers who will thrill not only the AmaZulu supporters but also the Bafana Bafana supporters.”
(AmaZulu FC General Manager)
“Through a well organised, professional program we develop players to the best of their abilities, aiming to produce well-rounded individuals. Through the partnership with AmaZulu FC we offer a clear pathway to the professional ranks, without compromising the young player’s academic future.”
